The most important agency you’ve never heard of: the Arizona Corporation Commission
This Commission decides your energy costs and clean water future.
The Arizona Corporation Commission (ACC) is a statewide elected office with authority over public utilities, corporations, and pipelines providing the agency with an outsized influence over environmental and clean energy policies in Arizona. The 5-seat agency has staggered 4 year terms, and 3 seats will be up for election this year. Because it is a down ballot race for an office with less public exposure than those at the top of the ballot, almost one-fifth of Arizona voters in the 2020 Presidential election skipped the ACC.
The Arizona Corporation Commission:❯ Regulates several hundred public utilities serving the state, including setting the rates and charges for service and ensuring adequate, reliable service.❯ The public utilities include APS, Southwest Gas, Toucan Electric Power, Qwest, and Arizona-American Water, etc. Note that SRP (Salt Water Project) is a political subdivision of the state of Arizona and is overseen by an elected Board of Directors, not the Corporation Commission.❯ The Commissioners decide policy for the agency, act as judges in rate cases and other proceedings and have broad legislative authority in writing rules and regulations. The ultimate responsibility for final decisions on granting or denying rate adjustments, enforcing safety and public service requirements and approving securities matters, rests with the Commissioners.❯ The Commissioners set energy efficiency and clean energy standards for the state, as well as environmental review standards for energy companies.
Why Should You Care?
❯ Informed Voters are in the best position to understand the ways environmental policies impact their families, communities, and personal health, especially when deciding how public utilities generate energy.❯ The ACC is a massively important elected commission that sets policies that directly impact the finances of nearly every Arizonan, as well as the environmental impacts utilities and others are causing.❯ In the hot Arizona desert, water is vital to the survival of our families and future generations. Arizona is facing a looming water shortage and it’s urgent for our leaders to take action. The Arizona Corporation Commissioners who oversee electric, gas, and water companies have the power to consider water use when approving new power plants. Our precious water is the lifeline to a bright future for rising generations and the Corporation Commission is tasked with helping to set our course.❯ Arizonans deserve sensible environmental and energy generation policies to protect their own health as well as the natural beauty of our state.❯ Not voting for down ballot races like the ACC means not having a voice in making decisions about Arizona’s environmental future.
What Can You Do?
The commissioners are elected, which means you can vote for commissioners who share your interests and values. The Commission has five elected members who serve 4-year terms. This year voters will vote for three members. The current members of the Commission are:——❯ Nick Myers (R)
——❯ Lea Márquez Peterson* (R) (Running for re-election)
——❯ Jim O'Connor* (R) (Running for re-election)
——❯ Kevin Thompson (R)
——❯ Anna Tovar* (D) (Running for re-election)
Rate-setting Power
When a company like APS wants to increase the cost of electricity for its consumers–ie, for you–it has to convince the ACC. Decisions like this directly impact you, your family and your wallet.
